This material can include carbonate, bicarbonate, chloride, sulfate, phosphate, nitrate, calcium, magnesium, sodium, organic ions, and other ions. A certain level of these ions in water is necessary for aquatic life. Changes in TDS concentrations can be harmful because the density of the water determines the flow of water into and out of an organism\u2019s cells. However, if TDS concentrations are too high or too low, the growth of [\u2026] aquatic life can be limited, and death may occur.\u00bb<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Determining TDS.<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">TDS is commonly tested with a conductivity probe that detects ions, and then values are derived differently depending on the use for which the water is destined. Gravimetric tests can also measure high TDS concentrations, but they overlook volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and particular solids can also be measured in isolation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The solids may find their way into the water through leaching and runoff from natural sources, in the case of silt and minerals, or through human activities in the case of sewage and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluencecorp.com\/wastewater-treatment-solutions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wastewater<\/a> discharges, urban and agricultural runoff, and salts used to de-ice roads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Most drinking water, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/sdwa\/drinking-water-regulations-and-contaminants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">U.S. Environmental Protection Agency secondary standards<\/a>, contains an average of between 200 and 300 mg\/L of TDS. Water with TDS of more than 500 mg\/L is not recommended for human consumption because high amounts of TDS in drinking water can negatively affect palatability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The relative safety of water depends on which solids are present, so TDS is not necessarily a measure of drinking water safety; however, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.water-research.net\/index.php\/water-treatment\/tools\/drinking-water-smells-taste-and-odors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TDS often affects water\u2019s taste, smell, and color<\/a>. The World Health Organization (WHO) has quantified <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/water_sanitation_health\/dwq\/chemicals\/tds.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the effect of TDS levels on aesthetics<\/a> as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Excellent: &lt;300 mg\/L.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Good: 300-600 mg\/L.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Fair: 600-900 mg\/L.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Poor: 900-1,200 mg\/L.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Unacceptable &gt; than 1,200 mg\/L.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Also unacceptable: Extremely low.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the United States, TDS is considered a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.epa.gov\/dwstandardsregulations\/secondary-drinking-water-regulations-guidance-nuisance-chemicals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00absecondary maximum contaminant level\u00bb<\/a>. That is, most dissolved substances do not threaten health, but their color, odor, and taste may prompt consumers to stop drinking or using water even if it is safe. The EPA has a secondary drinking water standard for TDS of no more than 500 mg\/L.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Excessive amounts of some of the compounds dissolved in water can also cause corrosion or other problems in water distribution systems. A prime example is scaling, which damages pipes, water heaters, and appliances.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Dissolved Solids in Commercial Settings.<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Conductivity is an important water quality metric in manufacturing, when water with low specific conductance is needed. Specific conductivity is a measurement of the ions present in water. For example, a <a href=\"http:\/\/water.usgs.gov\/edu\/characteristics.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">high amount of salt dissolved in water<\/a> affects water\u2019s conductivity and can cause purity problems for pharmaceutical or food and beverage manufacturers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluencecorp.com\/water-treatment-solutions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">water treatments<\/a> are available, including flocculation, filtration, biological treatment, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluencecorp.com\/reverse-osmosis-systems\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reverse osmosis<\/a> (RO), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluencecorp.com\/desalination\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">desalination<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluencecorp.com\/aerators\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">aeration<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">High saline content can also render water unsuitable for agricultural irrigation and wreak havoc on equipment.
